Managing Buildings
What is a Building?
In DoorLedgers, a Building represents any property you own or manage – it could be an apartment complex, a single-family home, a duplex, or a condo. Buildings are the top level of your property organization.
Adding a New Building
Follow these steps to add your first property:
Step 1: Navigate to Buildings
- Log in to your DoorLedgers account at app.doorledgers.com
- Look at the left sidebar navigation
- Click on “Buildings” – it has a home icon
Step 2: Click Add Building
- On the Buildings page, find the “Add Building” button (top right)
- Click the button to open the new building form
Step 3: Fill in Building Details
Complete each field on the form:

| Description | No | Notes about the property (parking, amenities, etc.) | “4-unit building, shared laundry, 2 parking spots” |
Step 4: Save the Building
- Review all the information you entered
- Click the “Save Building” button
- You’ll be redirected to the building list where you’ll see your new property
Tip: After adding a building, immediately add its units to keep your setup organized.
Viewing Building Details
To see all information about a specific building:
- Go to Buildings in the sidebar
- Click on the building name in the list
- You’ll see the building detail page with tabs for:
- Units – All units in this building
- Tenants – Current tenants
- Expenses – Property expenses
- Financial Summary – Income and expense breakdown
Editing a Building
Made a mistake or need to update information?
- Go to Buildings in the sidebar
- Find the building you want to edit
- Click the “Edit” button (pencil icon) or click on the building name
- On the building page, click “Edit Building”
- Make your changes to any fields
- Click “Save Changes”
Deleting a Building
Warning: Deleting a building permanently removes:
- All units within the building
- All lease records
- All expense records for this building
- All rent payment history
This action cannot be undone.
To delete a building:
- Go to the building’s detail page
- Click “Delete Building”
- Confirm the deletion when prompted
- The building and all associated data will be permanently removed
After Adding a Building: Next Steps
Once you’ve added a building, here’s what to do next:
- Add Units – Create the individual rental units within your building (apartments, condos, etc.)
- Add Tenants – Enter your tenant information
- Create Leases – Link tenants to units with lease agreements
- Set Up Payments – Configure Stripe to accept online rent payments
Building Organization Tips
- Name consistently – Use a naming convention that works for you (address-based, nickname-based, etc.)
- Add complete addresses – This helps with reports and tenant communications
- Use descriptions – Note important details like number of units, parking situation, or management notes
- One building per property – Even a single-family home should be its own “building” with one unit
